Annual General Meeting – 18 August 2014

At the 2014 Annual General Meeting held on 18 August in the Reading Room of the Fitzroy Library the Guest Speaker was Dr Charles (Chips) Sowerwine. Professor Charles Sowerwine is currently a member of the RHSV Council and editor of History News. His address was titled “History, History Societies and Preservation in a Neo-Liberal Society”.

A MAN IN HIS TIME
Francis Clark, 1840-1896

Tuesday 27 May, 2014 at 7 pm in the Fitzroy Library Meeting Room.
Alison Hart, a direct descendent of Clark, presented his story

Francis Clark, was a businessman, speculator and Melbourne City Councillor. He built and was the long-time owner of the Devonshire Arms Hotel in Fitzroy Street. The building is now owned by St Vincent’s Hospital. Clark had an interesting life as a colonist for over 50 years.

National Trust Heritage Festival in April 2014
The Fitzroy History Society conducted a walk, Journeying to Fitzroy in 1841 on Saturday 26 April.

Sarah and Richard Bunbury arrived in Melbourne in 1841.
The Fitzroy History Society  conduced a walk from their arrival point on the Yarra River to their new home in Fitzroy. Our retracing of their journey was based on Sarah’s letters held in the State Library of Victoria.

National Trust Heritage Festival, April, 2013

During the National Trust Heritage Festival in April, FHS conducted walks in Gertrude Street.
The social history of the street was expounded by Maria Frendo and Michael Doogan, aided by a cast of actors organised by Rose Chong.

Professor Miles Lewis conducted a walk that looked at the architectural history of the street.
