Welcome to the first two issues of your free community newspaper, The Rotunda. Throughout Covid, we have all depended more on our own neighbourhoods. Lockdown put the emphasis back onto village life – seeking and finding everything we need in close proximity to home.
North Fitzroy has always had a great sense of community, but has never had a newspaper to grow, record and celebrate it. Hence this initiative. It’s been created by a North Fitzroy resident – a first year university student who has decided to give it a go.
The Fitzroy History Society 2021 Annual General Meeting – Tuesday 7 December.
We are holding our AGM on Tuesday 7 December starting at 6 pm.
The venue is the The Rose Fitzroy ( Hotel ) at 406 Napier Street.
Aside from presentations by FHS, we are pleased to advise that our guest speaker will be Julie Cliff.
Following the AGM, those who wish to stay may like to join us for our annual dinner at the same venue.
Life and Death at Charles Street, Fitzroy, in the 1870s
A talk by Dr Julie Cliff, AO
Meeting will be held at The Rose Fitzroy (Hotel) 406 Napier St, Fitzroy. Start time is 6pm.
Julie Cliff has a family history which extends back to Charles Street, Fitzroy, in the 1870s. Her talk will commence from the family home just 150m south from the Town Hall Reading Room. Julie will explain her discoveries about life and death issues in the nineteenth century, with attention to infectious diseases, and an interesting sequel in the 1940s. She will draw on her life experience in Public Health and Epidemiology on a global scale.
JULIE CLIFF: Julie graduated MBBS from the University of Melbourne in 1967 and has London postgraduate qualifications in internal medicine, tropical medicine and community health. For almost forty years now, she has lived and worked in Mozambique, helping to build both the health system and its medical workforce. Julie Cliff has also made important contributions to the establishment and development of the Mozambique health system as a physician and epidemiologist at Maputo Central Hospital and with the Ministry of Health, and as a professor in community health at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo. Since her arrival in Mozambique, the medical workforce has increased more than tenfold; over a thirty year period most doctors were taught by Julie Cliff.
International recognition for her achievements in epidemiology and public health is widespread. She was an International Epidemiologic Fellow at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, USA, and has given the Annual Pumphandle Lecture to the John Snow Society in London. In 1996, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia and has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Monash University, and an Honorary Doctor of Medical Science from University of Melbourne.
